It is an urban legend:
The Kindness of Strangers
This story has been around for so long that it
qualifies for "urban legend " status.
A young man and his wife were driving along
distance to visit relatives. They gotten a late start, and it
started to get dark, They decided to look for a place to
spend the night.
Just off the road, they saw a small hotel, all but
hidden in the woods. "I wonder if they're even open" the
wife said. So they pulled over and, sure enough, a little old
man and woman who looked like his wife were pratically
waiting by the front door. Ofcourse they were open, the
couple said. But they hadn't have a visitor in so long that
none of the guest room were ready. They had a spare
bedroom in the house, though, and they would enjoy the
company.
The old woman made coffe and brought out
some cake, and the four of them talked for a while. Then
the young couple went to their room. They asked the price,
but the old man said he would not accept any money. "We've
pretty much retired and shut down the old hotel anyway," he
said, "and we're just so happy to have some young folks
around again."
